How This Calculator Works

The FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) calculator determines when you can retire based on your savings rate, investment returns, and desired retirement spending. Your FIRE number is the amount you need invested to live off the returns forever.

FIRE Number = Annual Expenses รท Safe Withdrawal Rate

We use the future value of a growing annuity formula to calculate how long it takes to reach your FIRE number, accounting for compound growth on both your existing savings and future contributions.

Years to FIRE = ln((FI ร— r + PMT) รท (PV ร— r + PMT)) รท ln(1 + r)

Where FI is your FIRE number, r is your expected return, PMT is your annual savings, and PV is your current portfolio value.
