Budget vs Actual Tracking in SavePoint

Creating a budget is step one. The real value comes from comparing what you planned to spend against what you actually spent, then using those insights to adjust your behavior or your budget. SavePoint makes this comparison easy with built-in tracking that shows you exactly where you stand throughout the month.

💡 Why Tracking Matters

A budget without tracking is just wishful thinking. SavePoint compares your actual spending to your budget in real time, so you can course-correct before the month ends instead of discovering problems after the fact.

Setting Up Your Budget

Start by creating your budget in SavePoint. Go to the Budget page and either use the setup wizard for a new budget or modify an existing one. Enter your expected monthly income and set spending limits for each expense category.

SavePoint uses a three-level category system: main categories (like "Groceries" or "Entertainment"), Subcategory 1 for classifying spending as "Needs" or "Discretionary," and Subcategory 2 for grouping by life area (like "Food" or "Transportation"). This structure helps you analyze spending patterns at different levels of detail.

Don't worry about getting your budget perfect on the first try. Most people need 3-6 months of tracking to understand their real spending patterns. Start with estimates and refine as you go.

Understanding the Budget Dashboard

Once your budget is set up, the Budget page shows four summary cards at the top:

Total Budgeted Income: Your planned monthly income with a progress bar showing actual earnings.

Total Budgeted Expenses: Your planned monthly spending with progress showing actual expenses.

Net Savings: The difference between income and expenses, showing your planned savings target.

Budget Year: Which year's budget you're currently viewing.

Below these cards, each budget category displays a progress bar. Green means you're on track, yellow indicates you're approaching your limit, and red shows you've exceeded your budget for that category.

Using the Cashflow Center

For deeper analysis, the Cashflow Center provides month-by-month comparisons. Navigate to Cashflow Center in the sidebar to see a detailed breakdown of every budget category across all months.

Each cell shows your budgeted amount versus actual spending. Green numbers mean you came in under budget, red means you exceeded it. You can click on any cell to drill down and see the individual transactions that made up that spending.

The Cashflow Center is particularly useful for spotting patterns. Maybe you consistently overspend on dining out in months with birthdays. Or your utility bills spike in summer and winter but you've budgeted the same amount year-round. These insights help you create more realistic budgets.

💡 Pro Tip: Weekly Check-ins

Instead of waiting until month-end, review your budget progress weekly. A quick look at the progress bars helps you identify categories approaching their limits while you still have time to adjust your spending.

Making Adjustments

When budget and actual spending don't align, you have two options: change your spending or change your budget. Both are valid responses depending on the situation.

If you consistently overspend in a category despite trying to cut back, your budget might be unrealistic. There's no shame in adjusting your budget to reflect your actual life, as long as your total spending doesn't exceed your income.

If a category is consistently underspent, you might be able to reallocate that money to areas where you're struggling or increase your savings rate.

Year-Over-Year Comparison

After you've tracked for a full year, you can use previous years' data to inform your budget planning. SavePoint lets you switch between budget years using the year dropdown. Compare your current year's performance to last year to see if spending patterns have changed.

This historical view is particularly valuable during annual budget planning. Instead of guessing, you can base next year's budget on what actually happened this year.
