Free Tax Filing Still Available Despite Changes
The IRS discontinued its Direct File pilot program in late 2025, but that does not mean you have to pay for tax preparation. The long-standing IRS Free File program remains available, along with other free options for eligible taxpayers.
2026 Filing Season Dates
The IRS began accepting 2025 tax returns on January 26, 2026. The filing deadline is April 15, 2026. IRS Free File opened January 9, letting taxpayers prepare returns early and submit when filing officially opened.
IRS Free File Program
If your 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) was $89,000 or less, you qualify for IRS Free File guided tax software. Eight private-sector partners offer free federal tax preparation through this program:
1040.com (Drake Software), 1040Now, ezTaxReturn (English and Spanish), FileYourTaxes, OLT.com (Online Taxes), TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA (TaxHawk), and TaxSlayer.
Each partner has specific eligibility requirements beyond the income threshold, including age and state residency. Use the IRS "Find a Trusted Partner" tool at IRS.gov/FreeFile to identify which option fits your situation.
Important: Access these offers through IRS.gov, not directly through the company websites. Going directly may route you to paid versions instead of the free options.
Free File Fillable Forms
For taxpayers with AGI above $89,000 or those comfortable preparing taxes without guided software, Free File Fillable Forms offers electronic versions of IRS paper forms. This option is available to all income levels starting January 26.
This approach requires more tax knowledge since there is no guided interview process. It works best for people with straightforward tax situations who understand how to complete the forms correctly.
VITA and TCE Programs
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides free tax help for people with disabilities, limited English proficiency, and those with incomes generally under $67,000.
Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) focuses on taxpayers age 60 and older, with volunteers specializing in pension and retirement questions.
Both programs offer free return preparation through trained volunteers. Find locations through the IRS website or by calling 800-906-9887 (VITA) or 888-227-7669 (TCE/AARP Tax-Aide).
New for 2026
The 2025 tax year introduces new deductions through the "One, Big, Beautiful Bill" including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and enhanced deductions for seniors. These additions may complicate some returns. Consider waiting for guidance if these apply to you.
MilTax for Military
Active duty military, some veterans, and their families can use MilTax, a Department of Defense program providing free federal and up to three state returns. The software handles military-specific tax situations like combat pay and PCS moves.
Access MilTax through MilitaryOneSource.mil to verify eligibility and begin your return.
Choosing the Right Option
For simple returns with just W-2 income and standard deductions, nearly any free option works well. For more complex situations involving self-employment, rental income, or itemized deductions, the guided software from Free File partners provides more support.
Review each partner's eligible forms list before starting. Some free options have limitations on supported forms and schedules.
Track Your Tax Documents
SavePoint helps you track income and expenses throughout the year, making tax time easier. When you have organized financial records, preparing returns goes faster regardless of which software you use.
