International Expense Tracking with SavePoint

Whether you're traveling abroad, shopping from international retailers, or maintaining accounts in multiple countries, tracking expenses across currencies requires some extra attention. SavePoint handles this through its multi-currency features, letting you record transactions in their original currency while maintaining accurate totals in your base currency.

Recording Foreign Transactions

When you enter a transaction in SavePoint, you can specify the currency. By default, it uses your account's currency, but you can change this for individual transactions. If you paid 45 EUR for dinner in Paris but the charge went to your USD credit card, you'd record the expense in EUR and SavePoint handles the conversion.

This preserves the original amount for your records while showing you the actual impact on your budget in your base currency. Both numbers stay visible: the 45 EUR you actually spent and the equivalent in USD.

💡 Using Bank Rates

For the most accurate tracking, record the exchange rate your bank actually charged. This appears on your statement, often next to the transaction. Using this rate instead of a market rate ensures your records match your actual account balances.

Travel Expense Categories

Consider creating travel-specific subcategories for trips. Rather than mixing foreign restaurant expenses with your regular dining out category, you might tag travel expenses separately. This lets you see exactly what a trip cost and analyze travel spending patterns over time.

After returning from travel, review your entries against your bank statement. Credit card charges often post days after the transaction, sometimes at different exchange rates than you expected. Reconciling ensures nothing slipped through.

Business and Mixed-Use Tracking

If some international expenses are business-related while others are personal, consistent categorization matters for tax purposes. SavePoint's category system lets you maintain clear separation. Tag business expenses appropriately so you can pull them for expense reports or tax deductions.

For those who travel frequently for work, having clean records of international expenses simplifies reimbursement processes and tax documentation.

Long-Term International Living

If you live abroad or spend significant time in another country, you might maintain accounts in both currencies. SavePoint handles this by letting each account have its own currency setting. Your local checking account stays in local currency while your home country accounts stay in their currency. The Dashboard and Balance Sheet convert everything to your chosen base currency for the complete picture.

Track Expenses Anywhere in the World

SavePoint supports over 150 currencies and works completely offline. Track your international finances on your terms, wherever you are.
