Setting Up Exchange Rates in SavePoint
If you track accounts in multiple currencies, exchange rates determine how everything converts to your base currency. Getting these rates right means accurate net worth calculations and meaningful comparisons across your accounts.
Accessing Exchange Rate Settings
Navigate to Settings in SavePoint, then find the Multi-Currency section. Here you'll see your base currency setting and options for managing exchange rates. Your base currency is what all other currencies convert to for reporting purposes.
The exchange rate table shows all currency pairs you've used. For each pair, you can set rates for specific dates. This gives you control over exactly what conversion values appear in your reports.
💡 Base Currency Selection
Choose the currency you think in and plan with as your base currency. For most people, this is their home country's currency or wherever they do most of their spending. All your consolidated reports and net worth calculations will display in this currency.
Setting Rates for Specific Dates
Exchange rates fluctuate constantly. SavePoint lets you enter rates for specific dates, which is particularly useful for balance sheet snapshots. If you're recording your month-end net worth, you probably want exchange rates from that same date rather than today's rates.
To add a rate, select the currency pair, enter the date, and input the rate. SavePoint will use this rate for transactions and balances on that date. For dates without a specified rate, SavePoint uses the nearest available rate.
Where to Find Exchange Rates
You can get exchange rates from several sources. Your bank statements often show the rates used for specific transactions. For general rates, the European Central Bank publishes daily reference rates. XE.com and similar services show current and historical rates. For precision, use rates from whatever institution actually handled your money.
The specific source matters less than consistency. Pick a reliable source and use it throughout. This ensures your multi-currency tracking remains coherent even if rates from different sources vary slightly.
Handling Transaction Currencies
When you record a transaction in a foreign currency, SavePoint uses the exchange rate for that transaction's date to calculate the base currency equivalent. If you paid 50 EUR for something and your base currency is USD, the transaction shows both the EUR amount and the USD conversion.
For the most accurate tracking, record the exact rate your bank or card used if available. This matches what actually hit your account rather than a market rate that might differ slightly.
