Year Over Year Comparisons in SavePoint

Tracking your finances month to month shows immediate trends, but comparing year over year reveals the bigger picture. Are you actually spending less on dining out than last year, or does it just feel that way? Is your net worth growing at a sustainable pace? Year over year comparisons answer these questions with data.

SavePoint provides several tools for comparing your financial progress across multiple years, giving you insights that monthly tracking alone cannot provide.

Using the Yearly Trends Feature

The Yearly Trends section in SavePoint shows your financial performance across years in a single view. You can see how income, expenses, and savings have changed over time, identifying patterns that might not be obvious from month-to-month data.

Access Yearly Trends from the main navigation sidebar. The default view shows your current year compared to the previous year, but you can adjust the date range to compare any periods you've been tracking.

What to Look for in Year Over Year Data

Are your total expenses growing faster than your income? Has a specific category (like utilities or subscriptions) crept up significantly? Is your savings rate improving or declining? These trends become clear when you zoom out to the yearly view.

Comparing Budgets Across Years

SavePoint organizes budgets by calendar year. When you create a new year's budget, you can reference previous years' actual spending to set more realistic targets. The Cashflow Center provides month-by-month breakdowns showing budgeted versus actual spending.

If a category consistently exceeds your budget year after year, that's useful information. Either the budget needs adjustment to reflect reality, or you've identified an area where spending habits need to change.

Net Worth Progression

The Balance Sheet feature tracks your net worth over time. Looking at year-over-year changes tells you whether you're building wealth at a pace that aligns with your goals.

Compare your January 1st net worth each year to see annual progress. Factor in market conditions for investment accounts. A year with lower net worth growth might simply reflect a down market rather than poor financial management.

Setting Up Meaningful Comparisons

For accurate year over year analysis, consistency matters. Use the same categories throughout the year and across years. Categorize similar transactions the same way. The more consistent your tracking, the more meaningful your comparisons become.

If you need to change your category structure, consider doing so at the start of a new year to maintain clean historical data.

Context Matters

Year over year changes don't happen in a vacuum. Major life events, inflation, career changes, and family changes all affect your numbers. Use the Notes field on transactions and accounts to record context that will help you understand comparisons later.

Using Insights for Planning

Year over year data helps you set realistic goals for the coming year. If your grocery spending increased 8% last year while inflation was 3%, that's actionable information. If your income grew 10% but your savings rate stayed flat, your expenses absorbed all the gains.

Start Building Your Financial History

The sooner you start tracking, the more valuable your year over year comparisons become. SavePoint stores your data locally, building a comprehensive financial history you own.
