Performance Updates: Making SavePoint Faster
Speed matters. When you open SavePoint to check your finances, you want the data there instantly. When you enter a transaction, you want confirmation immediately. Sluggish software creates friction that makes people use it less, and financial software only helps when you actually use it.
Our Performance Philosophy
SavePoint runs entirely on your local machine. There's no server waiting to respond, no network latency to overcome. In theory, everything should be instantaneous. In practice, software always has room for optimization.
We approach performance the same way we approach other features: iteratively, based on real user feedback and actual usage patterns. Some optimizations are obvious during development; others only become apparent when people use the software in ways we didn't anticipate.
💡 Key Point
Performance optimization is ongoing work, not a one-time fix. Each update includes improvements based on how real users interact with SavePoint.
Recent Performance Improvements
Dashboard loading: The main dashboard now loads faster, especially for users with extensive transaction history. We restructured how data aggregates to avoid recalculating unchanged values.
Chart rendering: Net worth trends, cashflow charts, and other visualizations render more smoothly. We optimized the charting library integration to reduce unnecessary redraws.
Transaction list scrolling: Large transaction lists scroll more smoothly. Virtualization improvements mean the application only renders visible rows, regardless of total transaction count.
Memory usage: Extended sessions no longer accumulate memory as aggressively. Cleanup routines now run more efficiently during idle periods.
How We Identify Bottlenecks
Performance problems are sneaky. What runs fine with 100 transactions might crawl with 10,000. What loads instantly on a new computer might lag on an older machine.
We identify issues through:
User reports: When you tell us something feels slow, we investigate. Specific details help: which screen, what action, how much data you have.
Profiling tools: Developer tools that measure exactly where time is spent during operations. This shows us which functions need attention.
Test data sets: We test with various data volumes to catch scaling problems before release.
What You Can Do
Some performance factors are within your control:
Regular backups and restarts: Occasionally restart the application to clear accumulated memory. Back up regularly through Settings > Backup & Restore.
Reasonable data volumes: While SavePoint handles substantial data, keeping transaction history reasonable helps. You can archive old fiscal years if history becomes unwieldy.
Hardware matters: SavePoint runs on most modern computers, but faster processors and SSDs do improve performance. If your machine is quite old, some lag may be unavoidable.
⚠️ Important Warning
If you experience a sudden, significant performance degradation, it might indicate a problem beyond normal optimization. Contact support if things dramatically slow down, especially after an update or system change.
Future Performance Work
Performance optimization never really ends. Areas we're actively working on include:
Report generation: Complex reports with long date ranges can take time. We're working on ways to pre-calculate common report configurations.
Import processing: Large CSV imports process sequentially. Parallel processing could speed this significantly.
Initial load time: The application startup time is acceptable but could be better. Lazy loading of non-essential components is on our roadmap.
Feedback Helps
If something feels slow, tell us. Be specific: what were you doing, how long did it take, how much data do you have? This information helps us prioritize optimization work where it matters most.
We built SavePoint to be the finance tool we wanted to use ourselves. Part of that is ensuring it stays responsive and pleasant to interact with, whether you have a dozen transactions or thousands.
