<p><strong>Cons:</strong> Little margin for error. Lifestyle may feel restrictive (not necessarily cup ramen every night :) ). Healthcare costs can consume large percentage of budget. May need to return to work if expenses increase.</p>

<p><strong>Best for:</strong> Minimalists, those comfortable with frugality, people prioritizing time over consumption, those willing to relocate for lower costs.</p>

<h3>Fat FIRE: Comfortable Independence</h3>

<p>Fat FIRE means achieving independence without lifestyle compromise. Travel, dining, hobbies, and housing remain at pre-retirement levels or better.</p>

<p><strong>Pros:</strong> Comfortable lifestyle indefinitely. Large margin for unexpected expenses. Room for lifestyle inflation. Can support family generously.</p>

<p><strong>Cons:</strong> Requires high income or long accumulation period. May take decades to achieve. Higher spending means more things can cause issues with the plan or failure.</p>

<p><strong>Best for:</strong> High earners, those unwilling to compromise lifestyle, people with expensive hobbies or family obligations, late starters with high savings capacity.</p>

<p>Barista FIRE means your investments cover most expenses while low stress part-time work fills the gap. The name comes from the idea of working at a coffee shop for spending money and health benefits, but can be from any part time job or income offset.</p>

<p><strong>Pros:</strong> Achievable faster than full FIRE. Generally able to maintain quality of life and routine (mindful of inflation of expenses). Employer provides health insurance, saving potentially thousands. Psychological and real financial safety net.</p>

<p><strong>Cons:</strong> Still requires some work. Part-time income not guaranteed. May not feel like real retirement.</p>

<p><strong>Best for:</strong> People who enjoy some work but hate the grind, those needing employer health insurance, people seeking structure, those with expensive healthcare needs.</p>

<h3>Coast FIRE: Time on Your Side</h3>

<p><strong>How it works:</strong> Save aggressively early and then let compounding do the rest. Stop saving for retirement but continue working to cover current expenses.</p>

<p><strong>Example:</strong> A 30-year-old with $250,000 invested may let it grow to $2,000,000+ by age 60 without adding another dollar (assuming 7% real returns). They could then work a lower-paying job they enjoy, spending their entire paycheck since retirement is already funded.</p>

<p><strong>Pros:</strong> Freedom to pursue passion careers. Lower stress since retirement is secured. Works especially well for young savers.</p>

<p><strong>Cons:</strong> Requires early start. Market assumptions may not hold. Inflation uncertainty over long periods. Temptation to withdraw early.</p>

<p><strong>Best for:</strong> Young people with early savings, those wanting career changes, people who want to pursue lower-paying meaningful work.</p>

<h3>How to Choose Your Path</h3>

<p>Many people find their target evolves over time. Someone starting with Lean FIRE goals may shift toward Barista FIRE as they discover what matters to them. At the end of the day, it is great to have a goal and a target. Being flexible is a key with FIRE and in general. And while these are some common FIRE paths, one can carve out their own as well.</p>

<p>The 4% rule is the most referenced guideline in retirement planning. But the research behind it has evolved significantly since Bill Bengen first published his findings in 1994. Here is what the latest research says about safe withdrawal rates.</p>

<h3>The Original 4% Rule</h3>

<p>Bill Bengen analyzed historical market data going back to 1926 and found that retirees who withdrew 4% of their portfolio in year one, then adjusted for inflation each year after, never ran out of money over any 30-year period. The worst historical periods (like retiring in 1966 before stagflation) still worked.</p>

<p>This became known as SAFEMAX, the maximum safe withdrawal rate historically.</p>

<h3>Bengen's 2025 Update: 4.7%</h3>

<p>In his 2025 book A Richer Retirement, Bengen updated his analysis with additional historical data and refined methodology. His new finding: 4.7% is the updated safe withdrawal rate, which he calls the Universal Safemax.</p>

<p>This higher number reflects that even the worst historical periods supported more than 4% when analyzed with improved methods. However, Bengen notes this assumes a traditional 30-year retirement window and a balanced stock/bond portfolio.</p>

<h3>Morningstar's 2025 Analysis: 3.9%</h3>

<p>Morningstar's State of Retirement Income 2025 report takes a different approach. Instead of looking backward at history, they use forward-looking projections based on current bond yields, equity valuations, and inflation expectations.</p>

<p>Their conclusion: new retirees in 2026 should use a 3.9% withdrawal rate. This more conservative figure reflects lower expected returns compared to historical averages.</p>

<h3>Why the Numbers Differ</h3>

<p>The gap between 4.7% (Bengen) and 3.9% (Morningstar) comes down to methodology:</p>

<p><strong>Historical analysis (Bengen)</strong> asks what always worked in the past. This is inherently backward-looking but covers actual market conditions including wars, depressions, and stagflation.</p>

<p><strong>Forward-looking analysis (Morningstar)</strong> asks what current market conditions suggest. Bond yields are lower than historical averages. Stock valuations are higher. These factors may reduce future returns.</p>

<p>Neither approach is wrong. They answer different questions.</p>

<h3>The Flexibility Factor</h3>

<p>Both researchers agree on one thing, flexibility dramatically increases safe withdrawal rates.</p>

<p>Morningstar found that retirees willing to reduce spending by 10% in bad market years can safely start at 5.7%. Those with even more flexibility, willing to cut up to 25% during downturns, can use withdrawal rates approaching 6%.</p>

<p>Charles Schwab's analysis supports this, suggesting 5.4% to 6% is sustainable for retirees with 20-year horizons who maintain spending flexibility.</p>

<p>Your FIRE number is the amount of money you need invested to cover your annual expenses indefinitely. Once you reach this number, work becomes optional. The math is simpler than most people think. We will preface though, these are of course only some standard opinions on the subject. Everything is a work in progress, may require reviews and revision, but is a good back of the envelope starting point.</p>

<p><strong>Annual Expenses × 25 = Your FIRE Number</strong></p>
<p>This is known as the Rule of 25, the inverse of the 4% safe withdrawal rate.</p>

<h3>Examples at Different Spending Levels</h3>

<p>If you spend $40,000 per year, your FIRE number is $1,000,000 (i.e. $40k x 25yrs). At $60,000 per year, you need $1,500,000 (i.e. 60k x 25yrs). For $80,000 annual spending, the target becomes $2,000,000 ($80k x 25yrs).</p>

<p>The multiplier of 25 comes from the idea that you can safely withdraw about 4% of a diversified portfolio each year without running out of money over a 30-year retirement. More on that in our post about the 4% rule. (Again, this is a starting point. 4% may or may not be enough depending on market conditions, your lifestyle, your life events and other factors).</p>

<h3>Why Expenses Matter More Than Income</h3>

<p>Your income determines how fast you can save. But your expenses determine how much you actually need. Someone earning $150,000 but spending $100,000 needs $2.5 million to retire. Someone earning $80,000 but spending $40,000 only needs $1 million.</p>

<p>This is why the FIRE community focuses so heavily on spending optimization. Every dollar you cut from annual expenses reduces your FIRE number by $25 in the case of the rule of 25.</p>

<p>Of course it is important to note that these are guidelines. Your expenses may be higher or lower in retirement. One can do everything possible to get as close to this estimate as possible, but best to consider possible outcomes as best as possible.</p>

<h3>Adjustments to Consider</h3>

<p><strong>Early retirement may need a lower withdrawal rate.</strong> If you plan to retire at 35 instead of 65, your money needs to last 50+ years, not 30. Bill Bengen's 2025 research suggests withdrawal rates of 4.7% remain safe historically, but Morningstar's forward-looking 2025 analysis recommends 3.9% for new retirees. Some early retirees use 3.5% to be conservative, which means multiplying expenses by roughly 29 instead of 25.</p>

<p><strong>Healthcare costs before Medicare eligibility.</strong> If you retire before 65 in the US, you need to budget for health insurance. This can add $500 to $2,000+ per month depending on your situation and location.</p>

<p><strong>Social Security impact.</strong> If you plan to claim Social Security eventually, it reduces how much your portfolio needs to cover. Some people calculate separate FIRE numbers for pre and post Social Security phases.</p>

<p><strong>Flexibility matters.</strong> Morningstar's 2025 research shows that retirees willing to adjust spending during market downturns can safely withdraw 5.7% or higher. Building flexibility into your plan provides significant margin.</p>

<h3>How to Calculate Your Personal Number</h3>

<li>Track your spending for at least 3 months, ideally 12 months</li>
<li>Identify your baseline annual expenses</li>
<li>Add expected changes (healthcare, housing, lifestyle adjustments)</li>
<li>Multiply by 25 for a standard calculation, or by 28 to 33 for more conservative estimates</li>

<p>The key is using real spending data, not guesses. Most people underestimate their actual expenses by 20% or more when they first start tracking. And once again, like most things, reality can change a lot from projections. So it is important to consider that that this is a guide, work with a professional, and be mindful for all outcomes.</p>
