As mentioned in our last update, one of our next priorities was improving the Transactions page, particularly the checkbook features that several users have requested. We are pleased to share that Version 1.6.5 lays the foundation by introducing support for check numbers and new options for tracking cleared transactions. This update also introduces a new Not Counted category type, the ability to create your own custom category types, and several important improvements to how categories are managed.
Transactions: check numbers and cleared status
Although SavePoint previously stored check numbers and cleared status, there was no convenient way to view or manage them. Both new columns are hidden by default and can be enabled through the View button at the top of the Transactions page.
- Enter a check number when adding or editing a transaction. The field also supports short descriptions such as EFT, DEBIT, or VOID.
- Sort check numbers numerically, search them, and include them in exports.
- Filter transactions by their cleared status, and update individual or multiple transactions using Edit Mode or Bulk Edit.
- Choose whether newly created transactions are marked as cleared by default, on the Transactions page or under Settings.
- On import, QIF files keep their cleared status, QFX and OFX bank statements import as cleared, and CSV and Excel imports follow your default.
Cleared status is intended for your own recordkeeping and does not affect account totals, budgets, envelopes, or other financial calculations.
Categories: a "Not Counted" type, and types of your own
The new Not Counted category type allows you to record transactions without including those amounts in your financial totals. For example, you may pay an $80 restaurant bill on behalf of yourself and a friend, with your friend reimbursing you $40 in cash. Split the transaction into $40 under Restaurants and $40 under Not Counted: the full transaction remains visible to match your statement, but only your portion is included in your expenses. Not Counted transactions are left out of income and expense totals, budgets, cash flow, reports, yearly trends, FIRE and envelopes.
Under Settings > Category Management, a new Category Types section describes the five built-in types (Income, Expense, Transfer, Payment and Not Counted), and you can create custom types, such as Side Hustle or Paid for Others, that behave like the built-in type you choose.
Although we have tested these changes for compatibility, we recommend creating a backup before updating, as we do with all significant updates.
All existing categories keep their names and types, and transactions stay assigned to their current categories, so your existing totals should remain unchanged. Each profile also receives two new categories under Not Counted, named Not Counted and Uncategorized, and no existing transactions are automatically reassigned to them.
Safer category housekeeping
SavePoint will now prevent you from permanently deleting a category that is currently in use, and offers to deactivate it instead. If earlier versions left transactions without a category, the Transactions page can now offer to move them into Uncategorized, where they become visible again.
Changing the type of a category that already contains transactions now shows how many would be affected before you proceed, and Reset Categories to Defaults now keeps any default categories that still exist, along with their transactions, budget lines, and envelopes.
Smaller fixes
- Split transactions now calculate correctly in the Transactions summary cards, and the Type and Sub Category filters include them when any split line matches.
- Saving in Edit Mode no longer reverses transfers or payments, or marks all transactions as cleared.
- PDF export charts now export correctly across all supported themes, and single-month Cash Flow exports compare against that month's budget.
- Clearer encryption messages for a mistyped recovery key and for login password changes.
- Help and tutorials updated in all eight supported languages, plus database improvements for long-term stability.
Important note for existing users: the first time you open the Transactions page after updating, a one-time introduction explains the new features. By default, SavePoint will leave your existing transactions unchanged.
